Betty is my best friend Angela’s mother. She was visiting her daughter teaching English in Korea. I expected to see a typical 60 year old woman. But when I was introduced to her, I couldn’t help being surprised. She was wearing very short torn jean shorts, baseball cap and sneakers, besides she was holding a can of potato chips in her hand, just like a teenage girl. Instantly I thought she was very cool. We went to karaoke that night and had a good time together just like friends.
Betty divorced her abusive husband a long time ago when Angela was a teenager. Since then she has been living alone. But she has a steady boyfriend Jim. I heard that Betty and Jim live close to each other in the same city, but neither of them wants to commit to something big and live together. Even though they are long term boyfriend and girlfriend, they go back to their own homes at night. I think it’s funny but totally understandable.
Anyway, Angela always gives me surprising news about her mother.
“My mother and Jim visited me by motorbike last week. She bought a Harley Davison!”
“My mother’s new hobby these days is riding a parachute.”
One day I asked Angela, “Do you mother and her boyfriend never fight? Angela said, “Of course they sometime do! Recently my mother said she feels very frustrated when she has an argument with Jim these days. Jim wears a hearing aid, and has a habit of turning it off when Betty is about to yell at him.” I laughed loudly.
A woman over 60 playing a video game sounds awesome!
