Ms. Yu yi

I saw an Asian woman busy sweeping snow in her front yard this morning. She had short hair, but some hair near the top of the back of her head was stretched everywhere.

She reminded me of my old friend, Ms.YuYi, whom I met in the States. I met her in my ESL class in America.

I don’t know why I liked her a lot at that time even though she was much older than me. She invited me to her house and showed me how to make real Chinese style egg rolls and noodle soup…

She never put on make up and I heard that she never went to a hair salon. Her husband cut her hair. Her husband was a researcher at a university.

There was a picnic of ESL teachers and students on a Sunday. I asked Ms.Yu Yi to come to my house first because I wanted to make her beautiful.

She came to my house and I did her face using eye shadow, mascara, black eyebrow pencil and purple shiny lipstick. She looked totally different! She and I laughed and laughed looking in the mirror. She seemed to be very satisfied with my work.

We went to the park where everybody was getting together. Upon seeing Ms. Yu Yi’s face, everybody was surprised and gave her compliment. “Oh, Ms. Yu Yi! Beautiful!”

Around the time that the picnic was done, I found her all make up was gone. Unlike her pretty look in the morning, her face, especially around her eyes, turned to gray color. I asked, “Hey, did you remove the make up?” She said, “no, no, no, but it’s itchy!” While talking to me, she was rubbing her eyes worn mascara with her finger unconsciously. “Oh,no, Ms.Yu Yi,” that’s all I could say.

I miss her smile, voice, and her special expression for denial, “no, no, no no, no!!”
