Nias Island in Sumatra

Nias! It is such a beautiful paradise of Indonesia. It has totally a unique and different culture from the other parts of the country. The island has not only beautiful scenery and beaches but has also preserved the remains of their historic megalithic structures everywhere. In order to get to the island, it took 12 hours by boat from Sibolga harbor. So most people in Nias I met said they never got out of the island in their lifetime.

When I heard the news that the island was struck by a tsunami last year, I felt very sad and was hoping the local people I met there were fine.

I stayed for a week in a guest house right on Lagundri beach. Every morning I woke up to the sound of waves. Every evening, I was dipping my body in the ocean to release my exhaustion from a long day trip. I can’t forget the beautiful twilight scene of the ocean while the guest house wife was busy making my dinner.

The guest house wife noticed when I woke up more quickly than anyone else. Once I got up and sat in the patio, not long after, she brought me a cup of coffee. I badly miss the coffee at this moment.

Sumatra style coffee!

They don’t use a filter but mix coffee powder with hot water and usually coffee overflows to a saucer, which is generous.

Even though I still think the island is worth visiting, I can tell any traveler who wants to visit there someday to be ready to get ripped off. Everywhere I went, everybody I met there except for a few people, I was very nervous about their offers because they always ended up asking for money or overcharged me for something.

Traveler’s book “Lonely Planet” explains what to see, where to stay, and how to get there.

The picture of me on the local bus is making me smile. People who see this for the first time may think it looks scary because I’m tightly surrounded by all local men on the bus. But they were very nice, I even teased them about their red teeth caused from chewing and spitting beetle nut. They were smiling shyly.

    Thanks,
