Maangchi's cookbook announcement

Hello everybody!
I have an announcement: I’m writing a Korean cookbook to be published in 2015 by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

First of all I want to thank everyone who ever bought or downloaded one of my first three self-published cookbooks. I really appreciate it. I made these books at the request of some of my readers, and I never expected they would be so popular. On many days my Kindle book is the #1 Asian cookbook on Amazon. Amazing! Thank you!

However, these books were self-published through Amazon, which means that I didn’t have a book publisher to print books. Amazon prints a book when someone orders it. I’m happy that many people enjoyed these books, but when I published the third one I realized some of the limitations self-publishing this way.

First: it’s very difficult to get the books into bookstores, especially outside of North America and Europe. I have many readers around the world who couldn’t get the books at all, even on Amazon.

Secondly, self-publishing means I had to do everything myself: layout, editing, legal, copyright, cover design, etc. It’s a lot of work.

Third: printing color books is expensive, and because Amazon is printing them one at a time, they are even more expensive, so the price for customers is higher than books printed by major publishers. And to keep the page number down and the price low, I had to leave out a lot of recipes and stories.

So I decided to work with a major publisher who could help me produce a better book at a cheaper price, to be sold around the world.

Since then I got the best literary agent in the world, Janis Donnaud, who helped me get write a good cookbook pitch for publishers. She also introduced me to top cookbook writer Lauren Chattman, who would help me with the writing. And now I’ve signed a contract with Houghton Mifflin to write a Korean cookbook. My editor there is the very talented Rux Martin, who recently edited Jacques Pepin’s new book. He’s one of my heroes!

My new book will have some of the most popular recipes from my website, but will be mostly new recipes that I haven’t posted yet.

I’m really thrilled that I got to meet these 3 interesting, intelligent, successful women, and I’m excited for the book we can produce together.

Stay tuned, everybody! This could only happen because of the huge support from my readers and viewers! Happy cooking! : )

    Congratulations!

In 2011 I discovered H-Mart, and in my quest for authentic Korean recipes, happened upon your gaji namul recipe and never looked back. I’m no longer living near H-Mart but I still make kimchi, radish and beef soup, etc. I carried four bottles of Three Crabs fish sauce all the way to the heartland for just that purpose ;)

Looking forward to the new recipes!

    Best wishes,
    Linda in Mich.
