Hello Maangchi and fans! I used to live in Atlanta when I went to graduate school over 10 years ago. There was a restaurant called Golden Buddha that featured Korean and Chinese dishes – owned by a Korean family. They had a Korean menu that had a dish called “Empress Chicken.” I absolutely loved it. The chicken was cut in a way that made the meat look like a flower at the end. It was covered in a spicy garlic black pepper sauce. I asked what it was called in Korea and they said “guangpoonji.” But I’ve never been able to get a similar dish when I order guangpoonji at other restaurants where I live in another state. I included a picture and would love the proper name and a recipe if you recognize it! Please help me make this delicious chicken! I miss it so much! Keep up the great work! Tony

It looks like ‘Spicy garlic fried chicken (Kkanpunggi: 깐풍기)’.
There is the post by Maangchi already.
      Let’s check the link.

Thank you so much jukkai for your reply. Yes. I tried that recipe and also ordered Kkanpunggi at a few restaurants that are a lot like Maangchi’s great recipe. The Kkanpunggi I have made and ordered at restaurants is boneless and kind of a sweet and sour type sauce.

However, although delicious too, it’s not similar to the Empress Chicken dish I mentioned above.

Here’s more description that may help you and our other Maangchi fans help me find the exact dish name and recipe. I really appreciate everyone’s help!

The dish I’m looking for has bones and the meat on the bone is cut and pulled to one end to look almost like a flower. If you look closely at my picture you can see the bones and meat. The sauce is strongly flavored with black pepper and garlic. Although it is a little sweet, it is not as sweet or like an orange sweet and sour sauce. The sauce in the Empress Chicken dish is like a brown shiny gravy. full of black pepper, garlic, and is spicy.

I described this dish to the Korean owner of a local restaurant and she described it exactly. She recognized it. She said it was a Korean dish – still called kkangpunggi by many – and it was made for special occasions.

Does the black pepper garlic gravy description help? I would really love to make the dish I miss so much! What do you think it is?

        Thanks everyone!
