I am fortunate to live in an area with great Korean food! Restaurants, grocerys and friends who have helped me learn the art of cooking and eating Korean. However Maangchi has been great for demytsifying foods even my " traditional" Korean friends buy premade!

This is truly a wonderful food! Real home style Kimchi is full of probiotics and when I am feeling out of sorts physically or mentally it is my go too along with a hardy soup or stew.

33 years since my first kimbab....and the beginning of a very healthy addiction to very beautiful friends and food!

Maangchi is the icing on the cake for me!

Thank you Maangchi!

Hi everyone, I am 23 and have 115 lbs to lose. Im trying to avoid fat and carbs. I weight train twice a week and do lots of cardio. Which korean dishes are the healthiest for weight loss and dieting? Any tips on recipe modifications like using quinoa instead of rice and no butter or greases? Thanks for any tips and meal suggestions!

I've been silently following maangchi's recipes and learning how to make Korean food. I am Korean and I love to cook. But because my mother doesn't make most Korean foods, I never learned how to make Korean food, and I wasn't even familiar with most Korean foods. I get introduced to korean food by visiting my friend's house and taste their mom's cooking. My brothers are begging for Korean food all the time so whenever I go there, I try to learn a new Korean recipe from Maangchi and experiement on them. They are very very grateful to you Maangchi for teaching their sister how to make authentic Korean food. And I'm so grateful that you make it so easy to follow. I have all your videos on my iphone and study them while I work out or ride on the bus. HAHA. You saved my Korean cooking life! Thank you so so much! xD

My first post in this Maangchi so please be patient. I suppose I should start with a quick intro and some general background information about me.

I've always been into Korean culture and music since I was a early adult. AS I got more into Korean stuff eventually I really got into the food and omg just as awesome Korean media is so is the food just as much!!

Returning from my first trip to korea this past summer I came back tasting so many different kinds of foods. My tongue was spoiled because I tasted only the best Korean food that exists, in the home country!! However returning to the States I wanted to continue eating the same Korean food I ate in Korea but Korean food here is so expensive. I can't speak for all places in the U.S. but at least here in the Bay Area its definitely on the pricey side.

So then I started my quest to learn how I can make similar dishes to some basic Korean dishes I love to eat so I could spoil my tongue even more and eat it more often, while saving money! ^^ So far I only cooked Soon Du Bu JJigae and Japchae and following this website I was quite successful. Actually normally I don't cook much but with a burning passion to eat more Korean food I learned how to make my first two dishes! And I'm nowhere near the end of my journey. ;D

note to everyone: since i've discovered maangchi's recipe videos on youtube, i've changed my diet almost completely to korean food. it's so easy to make, healthy and great tasting, i've quit eating that fat-oozing western fast food stuff once and for all.
after one and a half years, i've lost 42 kilos so far and i've never felt deprived of anything (the ultimate secret to successful weight-loss).

maangchi, you know me already since i've contacted you on youtube, but i feel it's about time to thank you publicly on your forum for your wonderful, wonderful videos. you helped me change my life.

I just joined! I've used a few of the recipes here, and they are so easy. Love your videos Maangchi! Now I can see how it's supposed to be done. I can't wait to try more.

I lived in Korea for about a year, maybe longer. There are some dishes that I really liked, and some that I crave even though it's been years since living there. I move a lot, but thankfully can usually find a Korean market. :)

I had some unexpected guests for Thanksgiving. The wife is Korean, and I was able to make some Korean food for her. She loved the Sujunggwa I made that I learned here. We had a great time cooking in the kitchen, and I showed her your website. They'll be back for Christmas, and I think I'll make Japchae and the ginger cookies- Maejakgwa, and of course some more Sujunggwa!

And now, even though I can't say the names of the dishes right, I can make it.
Thank you!

Hi, all. I have been a long time reader of this blog but have never posted before, but when Maangchi mentioned meeting readers who didn't post and how she wished they had, I decided to introduce myself.

I had never cooked for myself much before I found Maangchi's videos. I helped my family cook often and sometimes would heat myself up leftovers or boil some pasta that I would stir sauce in from a jar, but that was it. I was afraid of the kitchen and since I had experienced some funny disasters I was convinced I was better off not trying to cook.

However, seeing her great energy and happiness as well as having her break down the recipes in such an easy to understand way changed my outlook. I began to experiment, changing up her recipes based on what I had in the house. My first dish was a spinach side dish that was inspired by hers. Over time, I began to cook more and more, not necessarily only Korean food (my husband can't eat spicy food and certain ingredients disagree with him and I cook for both of us about 3/4 of the time). I began creating my own recipes and gaining confidence, so that even when something didn't turn out right I would just go right back to watching Maangchi, getting inspired, and trying again.

I now bond over recipes with my mom, brother and my closest friends, who all cook to varying degrees. I feel like I have an unbreakable connection to the family members who are not still in the world because of the good memories I have from before, and the new good memories I am creating now, wishing they were with me. I feel like cooking and eating good food brings people closer together and celebrates our differences while surprising us with our similarities! Thanks, Maangchi, for your time and dedication!

Hello, all. I was first introduced to Korean food, much against my own will. Why? I was enlisted in the army, and sent to South Korea for a year. I didnt think I would ever "get used" to the food. But now that I am back in the United States, I miss REAL South Korean food! I know the recipes I am looking for, but dont always know how to describe them. And I most certainly dont know how to properly spell them in Hongul (not sure I even spelled that right). I miss walking off base to "mom's" She knew exactly what we all ordered when we walked into their shops :) Here is my attempt at naming my favorite foods:

1) "Beef Bulgogui with white sticky rice"

2) Yakki Mandu (I'm pretty sure this website is the "right" mandu)

3) Orange citron tea (jelly-like with orange rind)

4) sweet rice cakes

5)...and there is a rice cake-type cookie thing we also made, but like I said, not sure how to describe it, and definatley dont know the Korean name for it. :(
