I lived in Arizona for four years. That was when I was first introduced to Korean cuisine via a friend. When we'd eat Korean food- usually when we ate out at this rather amazing restaurant our food would come with side dishes.

I guess, mine isn't a specific request for a recipe but I was wondering if you could go over some of the side dishes you'd find with Korean meals.

I know we had things like- and I apologize if I misspell any of these names... meh dhal chi, kimchi, mul kimchi, oi kimchi, oh dang...
And I was able to find what some of those things are- and if I'm not mistaken they are anchovies, cabbage kimchi, cucumber kimchi, radish kimchi, water sprouts, spinach...

But I also remembered these err potatoes and like soy bean sprouts ... and others I don't know the names to.

But basically, I just would like to know them so when I can get to a Asian market I know what to look for.

Please and thank you!

Hi, Usually western meal is consisted of appetizer, main dish, and dissert.

If I were you, I will pick dishes as followed:

appetizer: kimchi pancake or seafood pancake.( you can prepare these in advance, and just heat them up before serving. Don't forget to cut them up as one portion, maybe pizza shape will do fine.)

Main dish: bibimbap as Maangchi suggested. or in case you chose seafood pancake for appetizer, go for kimchi fried rice for main dish. If you combine sweet and sour pork, that will be great... sweet and sour pork also can be prepared in advance and all you need to do is pour the hot syrup over the fried pork...

Dissert: I will choose Korean perssimon drink.. or if you don't mind lots of work, then I will suggest kyungdan.. balled shaped korean rice cake.. I wish our great Maangchi introduce us Yanggaeng( sweet red bean jelly dissert)..

I agree with her that bibimbap is a really good choice! Anything that has a grain can feed LOTS of people so i would aim for those!

Btw,I just had to point out to koralex90 "WOW, are you from UC Davis?" Wait, aren't you also from BoAhouse? I'm from BoAjjang!?

Hi, Paul,

"big party for a lot of people (around 30-40) in a few weeks"
Yes, I agree with koralex90's idea!

dakkangjung: It's very good for party food and always popular and you can make it 4-5 hours in advance serving. You don't have to reheat the dish.
http://www.maangchi.com/recipe/dakkangjung

bibimbap will be good to feed so many people, too.
http://www.maangchi.com/recipe/bibimbap

Let us know how your dinner party goes later.

I know these recipes arent maangchi's but since you say u had bulgogi already, consider these..

http://aeriskitchen.com/2008/09/skewered-beef/

Thank you for the suggestions! But I did most of those dishes last time I hosted a Korean party. I wanted to have a slight variation to the typical bulgogi, japchae dinner.

Do you have any ideas, Maangchi?

I recommend the following:

Japchae http://www.maangchi.com/recipe/japchae
Bulgogi (not stew) http://www.maangchi.com/recipe/bulgogi-and-bulgogi-stew
Mandu http://www.maangchi.com/recipe/mandu
Pajun http://www.maangchi.com/recipe/ya-chae-jeon
Dakgangjung http://www.maangchi.com/recipe/dakkangjung
and for dessert,
Rice cake http://www.maangchi.com/recipe/gyungdan
OR
Hwajeon http://www.maangchi.com/recipe/hwajeon
OR
Maejakgwa http://www.maangchi.com/recipe/maejakgwa

Since you are doing a party, and it will take alot of work, maybe you can purchase the mandu from the store.. to make it alittle easier.. Maejakgwa and rice cake can be made the night before and bulgogi marinated the night before and grill it right before the party. Other things should be made right before the party - and possibly pajun should be made during the party to keep it hot and crispy..

good luck! i am sure it will be a hit!

Hello! My name is Paul, and I am a student living in Germany. I have been a fan of Maangchi's videos and recipes for a while now, but only dared to 'show' myself only now!

I love to cook for other people, and often invite people over for dinner for some simple Korean dishes I make for myself (my bulgogi is quite famous now :). The problem is, my repertoire is not very large, and I am planning to throw a big party for a lot of people (around 30-40) in a few weeks, and I just wanted to ask Maangchi if she could suggest a dinner menu which combines variety of dishes which showcases the wide range of tastes Korean cuisine offers, and value for money (as I am a student, I am on a budget...) without compromising on quality? Although most people I will invite can eat spicy things with no problem, some guests cannot, so if she could consider the non-chili eaters, it would also be appreciated! Well, ANY advice from Maangchi would be much appreciated! :)
