Hello! My name is Eymahnia, but my Korean name is Kyung Mi. I am using this website to help me learn more about Korean food, because I will soon be moving to Seoul, South Korea. I am already learning the language, but I want to learn about the food as well. I have always had a love for the Asian culture (mostly Korean and Japanese). This website is very much helpful though! Thank you!

Hi Everyone!
I live in the Chicago area and love my Korean food. Unfortunately, we moved to the north burbs and the dining here is lacking, particularly in Korean food! I went to the Costco in Lincoln Park and found these new seasonings and bought them about 3 weeks ago and must share them with my fellow Korean food lovers! I've cooked with these seasonings and added them on food too (Bulgogi seasoning on veggie pizza and Kimchi seasoning on almost everything!) Seriously brings all the flavor without the trek to the Korean market miles away. The Stir Fry Seasoning is so good in soups and added to rice bowls.

Anyway, thought I'd share with everyone cause it's a great find!

(oh - the brand name is "Swagger")

Hi guys, my name is gisselle and i'm from Ecuador South America.., I have many friends that would like to try a traditional korean food, but unfortunately we don't have any korean restaurant here, so we are trying to make a recipe by ourselves. I decide to start by making Kimchi, but i have a lot of trouble finding the ingredients here, like hot pepper flakes, fish sauce and sweet rice flour, so i felt really sad from the begining! I think that all South American have the same problem as me. I was looking for some substitutes but even in the recipe of them i have issues to find the ingredients like klep leaf for the fish sauce. I'm telling you all of this because i was wonder if maybe a nobel heart (begging :D) can write for us a recipe of at least this 3 things (sweet rice flour, fish sauce, squid, hot pepper flakes) with ingredients that are not too dificult to find in South America and FINALLY help me out for making Kimchi for all my Ecuadorian friends.

Happy early birthday! I really like to make Japchae for large parties because I can make a lot at once, its relatively cheap to make, and it can feed a number of people. Also, I am functioning on a college budge,t and this dish is good for that because you don't need a whole lot of meat for it. If you have lots of flavorful veggies added, you won't even miss it if you put less meat in to save money. A big platter of Kimbap is always a hit at parties too! I hope this helps, and good luck with your party :).

Hey everyone!

I'm new on maangchi.com, and am quickly becoming convinced that this is going to be a life savor!
In July, I'll be turning 18, and want to have a Korean themed birthday party; my mom and I are planning on cooking most of the food, and I'm actually getting ready to get up here in a minute to test the ddukbokkie recipe and see if I'll actually like it. ^_^ If anyone has any suggestions on what they think I should cook, I'd love to hear them!

Thanks, maangchi.com!!!

My first post in this Maangchi so please be patient. I suppose I should start with a quick intro and some general background information about me.

I've always been into Korean culture and music since I was a early adult. AS I got more into Korean stuff eventually I really got into the food and omg just as awesome Korean media is so is the food just as much!!

Returning from my first trip to korea this past summer I came back tasting so many different kinds of foods. My tongue was spoiled because I tasted only the best Korean food that exists, in the home country!! However returning to the States I wanted to continue eating the same Korean food I ate in Korea but Korean food here is so expensive. I can't speak for all places in the U.S. but at least here in the Bay Area its definitely on the pricey side.

So then I started my quest to learn how I can make similar dishes to some basic Korean dishes I love to eat so I could spoil my tongue even more and eat it more often, while saving money! ^^ So far I only cooked Soon Du Bu JJigae and Japchae and following this website I was quite successful. Actually normally I don't cook much but with a burning passion to eat more Korean food I learned how to make my first two dishes! And I'm nowhere near the end of my journey. ;D

Too excited and can't wait so I'll start...

My very first Korean recipe made in the New year 2012 is 김치 (Kimchi). Just made this little dish tonight. Yes, Safeway was out of produce because their delivery truck didn't make it due to inclement weather, so I took the last cabbage they had yesterday! Hehehe. :P

Today I arrived in Seoul - at around 5 in the afternoon. Fortunately Korea is only 3 hours behind New Zealand so there is no likelihood of jet lag. The flight was good with Korean Airlines keeping to their extremely high standards of service (with a smile all the way). For breakfast I had bibimbap (they described it as beef with rice and vegetables and I had to ask if they were talking about bibimbap - it is a shame they didn't just state that first). The bibimbap was delicious - though the little tube of gochujang (hot pepper paste) was a little small for my linking (I like my bibimbap to be super spicy). Also the sigeumchi namul (spinach side dish) was cooked but not seasoned - there was far too little garlic over all for my taste. Nevertheless it made me feel like I really was on my way to Korea. The bibimbap was served with miyeok guk (Seaweed soup) which was very tasty. For dinner we had three choices (two chicken and one beef) - I asked for the Korean food option and the hostess gave me one of the chicken dishes. I have no idea what it was called. It was rice with chicken in a very plain sauce with garlic. It was nice but definitely did not come up to the standard of the bibimbap. I wouldn't order it again.

We (my sister is traveling with me) caught a cab from the airport to the Koreana Hotel. The first thing we did was to seek out a place for dinner. We ended up in a very clean and bright restaurant down an alley way behind the hotel - I was drawn in by the very delicious looking photos of bibim naengmyeon. We ended up ordering the galbi jjim, however, because the restaurant owner recommended it. It was my first time trying it as I hadn't had a chance to cook Maangchi's recipe yet. It was amazing. It had a delicious soy based sauce and the ribs were braised with ginkgo nuts, chestnuts, jujubes, chills, and rice cakes. It was served with a delicious kimchi, oijangajji, pickled radish, and rice. I also had two glasses of soju (and had to take the rest back to the hotel for the rest of the week because it was so strong - especially after a 13 hour flight!)

After that we wandered around a bit and ended up at Mister Donut - Dunkin Donuts had no donuts left so we will have to wait to try their infamous tofu donuts. The flavors we picked were chocolate and coconut, pineapple cream, rice sugar, banana, coffee, and plain glazed. The texture was unlike donuts I am familiar with - being extremely chewy. They were not as chewy as rice cake but far more chewy than western donuts. The flavors were subtle and they weren't too sweet. Our favorite was the coffee one. I later found out that Mister Donut is a Japanese company - not Korean.

Other non-food related observations are that there are LOTS of people around on a Sunday night (including children), the people in general are extremely friendly and polite, and the weather is incredibly hot! Having come from the end of the coldest winter I remember experiencing in New Zealand it was quite a shock.

Our hotel room was upgraded for free (presumably because they saw that we are guests of the government) and the hotel service has been outstanding - there is a man employed to do nothing except stand in reception and bow to the guests as they arrive or leave! Amazing.

Hey guys! I'm Clement from Petaling Jaya, Malaysia and I'm currently studying Industrial Design in University of New South Wales in Sydney. I'm 19 years old and love cooking very much.

I wasn't really interested into cooking before until the time when I'm going to start my university life soon. Like many other university students, I've got to learn how to cook for the first time to feed myself, friends and families, anytime and anywhere. At that time, my dream is not only just to cook for survival, but to cook some real yummy food with passion and love. I also wanted to cook and learn something different... and Korean food has started my wonderful journey.

I chose Korean food instead of other cuisines because Korean food is very underrated and not as popular as French, Italian, Japanese, Thai, Chinese and etc. That was my main reason because I like to try new things. Besides that, I found that Korean cooking is not that complicated and the ingredients are relatively easy to find. What I love about Korean food is that we treat Korean food as our medicine. A lot of Korean dishes are well-known for their medicinal or healing properties such as Kimchi (김치), Hobajuk (호박죽), Doenjang jjigae ((된장찌개) and many more. Moreover, I like the fact that Korean food is not over-spiced so that we could smell and taste the original flavour of the dishes. Korean cooking always uses fresh and healthy ingredients which is why Korean diet is one of the healthiest diets in the world.

There are so many ways that I could describe Korean food, It's very simple and honest cooking, lots of different flavours, colourful, healthy, artistic and etc. I would always use my five senses to appreciate Korean food before, while and after eating. Somehow in a strange way, whenever I cook Korean food at home for my friends and family, whenever I'm eating at a Korean restaurant (and the best thing is, thanks to Korean food, I can read Korean now!) I feel like I'm at home, so Korean food it's a comfort food for me and It has definitely changed my life. I've got to say...that's pretty amazing.

I would like to say a very big thank you to Maangchi as well because Maangchi is the one that inspires me in everything. I always look up to Maangchi. In my opinion, Korean food has a big potential to become the next big thing and I'm very impressed with the innovative Taste of Korea team and the hardworking Korea Tourism Organization in the way how they promote Korean food to the world. I can say that Korean food is a role model for other countries that are also working hard to promote their cuisines.

By the way, at the same time, I like cooking Malaysian food and very interested to promote my very own cuisine. Malaysian food is also very underrated and if you are not familiar with Malaysian food, do check it out or ask me anything about it if you are curious about Malaysian food.

My last words? All the best to Korea and Maangchi!

Thank You.

Amazon.com sells a number of Korean products that you can have shipped. You can go to the Grocery and Gourmet food department and search for Korean foods. You can also type the name of the type of product you want. For example; soy sauce, sesame oil, kochujang.... I looked for duenjang and they didn't list that, but Korean fermented soy bean paste - did the trick.

There are a LOT of prepared foods that I have no idea of the quality of, and some foods that are not korean, but if you follow Maangchi's recipes and buy the korean ingredients to make your own you will probably be better off. But that of course is your decision.

For example there are prepared "Korean Barbecue Sauces". You would be better off making your own each time you need so there are no preservatives, etc.

And a suggestion - If you want to stay friendly with you post office, DO NOT have kimchi mailed to you. One broken package, and you won't be on good terms with them!

Hope this helps! Good cooking!

Hello everyone ^-^

I'm Emilie and I'm from Canada. I looove everything about Korea; K-Pop, K-Dramas, food, language, etc. I made some Korean dishes but nothing really elaborate because where I live, I can't find any of the basics korean ingredients to make those delicious dishes. The nearest Asian grocery store is at 7 hours hours(!!!! :O) from my home and the only ingredient I could find was 고추장 (hot pepper paste). I cannot do many dishes with only this, so I was wondering if there would be someone out there who lives in Korea or near a Korean grocery store and who could buy for me and send to me all the ingredients I need to make Korean food??? And then I would pay everything back to him by paypal.

If someone could do that for me, that would be soooo nice and awesome. I did not know where to ask this so I made a post here but if anyone thinks this is inappropriate, I will erase this.

Please, contact me by e-mail: emilie2425@hotmail.com
