I'm James, from West Virginia in USA.

I have a general love of food and cooking, with a particular interest in all things Asian, especially Korean type because it is incredibly spicy. I don't have access to much of the same ingredients Maangchi uses, the local Wal-Mart doesn't even stock half of the ingredients sometimes, however I find it easy to improvise with my knowledge of traditional American cooking of what can be substituted and what can't.

Kimchi is my absolute favorite dish. The hardest part about it, in my opinion, is waiting for it to ferment just right. I love it sour as much as I do spicy. I make mine using all the colors of bell pepper, lots of garlic, green cabbage (I can't find Chinese cabbage no matter where I look) onions and red pepper powder mixed with vinegar to make a very sour red pepper sauce (can't find flakes anywhere.) I also use anchovies as my source of fish sauce. Probably an odd recipe, I know, but again, there isn't much world culture where I live.

I am always experimenting in the kitchen. I've managed to cook some stuff that no one around here has ever even heard of before. In fact, my mom just tried Kimchi for the first time ever today.. She couldn't handle it.. I made it too spicy for her. (But I love it)

About me personally, I'm a computer geek by education but a security guard by profession. I'm the type of person who could go outside, tear down and rebuild a car, but come inside and do the same with a computer. I'm what is locally known as a high tech redneck.

I'll finish by giving a big thank you to Maangchi for sharing her amazing food and culture with the entire world. You've given me a lot of amazing information, and I'm always waiting for the next video or site update. :D

Hello & Greetings from Oklahoma City, OK! So glad I found this website with forums! I'm always looking for innovated ways to cook, present food, and entertain my guests! I am 30 years old born in Korea but raised in good ole U.S. My husband is German and both him and his mom love Korean food. My mom has taught me most of the basics growing up and there are things I learned on my own from trial and error. It's great to have this website as sometimes I am in a hurry and need specific measurements. I finally get to visit Korea (haven't visited since 1989!) with my husband and I'm can't contain my excitement! Also, I think Maangchi is just soooo darn cute!!!!!

My first post in this Maangchi so please be patient. I suppose I should start with a quick intro and some general background information about me.

I've always been into Korean culture and music since I was a early adult. AS I got more into Korean stuff eventually I really got into the food and omg just as awesome Korean media is so is the food just as much!!

Returning from my first trip to korea this past summer I came back tasting so many different kinds of foods. My tongue was spoiled because I tasted only the best Korean food that exists, in the home country!! However returning to the States I wanted to continue eating the same Korean food I ate in Korea but Korean food here is so expensive. I can't speak for all places in the U.S. but at least here in the Bay Area its definitely on the pricey side.

So then I started my quest to learn how I can make similar dishes to some basic Korean dishes I love to eat so I could spoil my tongue even more and eat it more often, while saving money! ^^ So far I only cooked Soon Du Bu JJigae and Japchae and following this website I was quite successful. Actually normally I don't cook much but with a burning passion to eat more Korean food I learned how to make my first two dishes! And I'm nowhere near the end of my journey. ;D

One of the best things about Maangchi, I agree, is her lack of fussiness. Her passion and eagerness to share shows us that cooking good food is no mystery.

Passion is so important. I'm so glad you overcame your fear of the imaginary "kitchen priesthood" and embraced something that you will enjoy more and more throughout your life: making tasty, healthy food.

Welcome to the kitchen!

Cheers!

Hi, all. I have been a long time reader of this blog but have never posted before, but when Maangchi mentioned meeting readers who didn't post and how she wished they had, I decided to introduce myself.

I had never cooked for myself much before I found Maangchi's videos. I helped my family cook often and sometimes would heat myself up leftovers or boil some pasta that I would stir sauce in from a jar, but that was it. I was afraid of the kitchen and since I had experienced some funny disasters I was convinced I was better off not trying to cook.

However, seeing her great energy and happiness as well as having her break down the recipes in such an easy to understand way changed my outlook. I began to experiment, changing up her recipes based on what I had in the house. My first dish was a spinach side dish that was inspired by hers. Over time, I began to cook more and more, not necessarily only Korean food (my husband can't eat spicy food and certain ingredients disagree with him and I cook for both of us about 3/4 of the time). I began creating my own recipes and gaining confidence, so that even when something didn't turn out right I would just go right back to watching Maangchi, getting inspired, and trying again.

I now bond over recipes with my mom, brother and my closest friends, who all cook to varying degrees. I feel like I have an unbreakable connection to the family members who are not still in the world because of the good memories I have from before, and the new good memories I am creating now, wishing they were with me. I feel like cooking and eating good food brings people closer together and celebrates our differences while surprising us with our similarities! Thanks, Maangchi, for your time and dedication!

I love learning to cook new things. Just started my adventure in Korean cooking a couple months ago and am having a blast! I had so many reminders recently that I loved Korean food that I just had to start making it on my own (friend mentioned getting into making kimchi ( I thought to myself - I love kimchi! I should make some too!), another friend mentioned hitting up a restaurant I hadn't been to in a long time and said it was still high quality, and on a Facebook discussion, recommended some Korean horror.) I figure three events so close together meant something. ^_^

I love that so many items are quick to make, which is fabulous as I have very few evenings where I can actually prepare food during the week. My first weekend, I made kimchi and the second I made gochujang. Each of which were quite large recipes so I shared to love with friends! This year's Misfit Thanksgiving (hosted gathering for friends that don't have family in town) produced several Korean dishes as I didn't feel like cooking a traditional meal and they were all met with success.

For years now I've had quite the bowl fetish and now have found a cuisine that maximizes my stash of bowls and makes me want to buy more! It's even revived my love for making Japanese food which I had gotten away from lately. Between making Japanese and Korean dishes, I hardly ever use plates these days.

I am so lucky there is such a vibrant Korean community in San Diego. We have a huge Korean market and loads of restaurants. I was out with a friend a on a couple Fridays where most of the Korean businesses are and man is it ever hopping! Most places didn't have any parking! Lest I not forget to mention, these two Fridays were also raining cats and dogs. I can't imagine what it's like when we have our usual nice SD weather! I guess if I want to go out, it will either have to be early and/or not on a Friday/Saturday!

Super thanks, Maangchi, for having such a great site with easy to follow recipes and great videos!

Hi everyone! Long time lurker but finally decided to sign up. I'm Kateri and I'm from the island of Kauai. I am Korean, born in Seoul, Korea, but I was adopted when I was a baby. My family is a local predominantly Portuguese family, so I basically grew up Portuguese.

I've loved cooking ever since I was a kid. When I moved back home from college three years ago, I discovered Maangchi and was really excited because I was wanting to get in touch with my Korean roots in some way. I feel a little bit more connected every time I cook one of her recipes.

Glad to meet you all!

Anyeonghaseyo! I'm actually Hmong, but I love cross-cultural cooking. I like to cook authentic food as well as modify it to my own personal version of them. I'm an aspiring actress from Minnesota, loves to cook, read, and a fashion-novice geek. I look forward to learning more about Korean cooking and dishes from Maangchi. Oh! And I love KDRAMAs, too! ^_^ I just recently started a blog, which you can feel free to stop by and look at some of my cooking at http://www.valyjuju.posterous.com and subscribe if you like. I only give out recipes and cooking instructions via request since I don't have a lot of time to sit and write down everything when I'm blogging. =)

Enclosed picture: I had some marinated beef jap chae with fresh veggies from my local Farmer's Market for dinner last night.

Hi, I'm Lyn from Singapore. I'm a SAHM of 2 girls, 10yrs and 6yrs. I love to cook and shows great interest in trying out new dishes. Whenever I cooked a new dish for my family to try and they like it, I feel so happy and contented. Recently just found a new interest in bento-ing and still learning that's why I started blogging and made a lot of new friends of the same interest :)
I came to know about Korean food during the period of time when I'm crazy over Korean Dramas which was about more than 6-7yrs back! the 1st Korean food that attracts me is the Bibimbap because of its vibrant colors and the way those Korean celebrities ate Bibimbap in the shows made me droops! LOL. Was wondering how it taste like until a day when I saw a Korean food stall in a food court with my family, I ordered without hesitating. YUMMY! It was really good! All of us like it so much! My elder girl can finish almost everything all by herself! From then on, whenever we had meals in a food court, I'll sure look for the Korean stall. I love the kimchi, ginseng chicken soup and the beef too!
I just cooked my own Bibimbap few weeks ago when I saw the supermarket launching out new Korean products. After that I found Maagchi's blog, ALL ABOUT KOREAN FOOD & RECIPES! Hooray! I can cook more Korean food now! :D

Hi Mrseum,

I live in Richmond. Yes, Youngbin Kwan is the Korean grocer at which I found my mung bean starch.

I was intimidated to visit. I don't think many non Koreans visit the store.

I have yet to eat at the restaurant since they re-located to the former location of Red Lobster. I plan to go soon.

I have gone to the other Korean restaurant nearby. I got my food to go because I was too shy to eat inside.

I know, that must sound lame. However, I think the majority of their customers are Koreans. They seemed surprised to see me there.

I am half-Korean and originally from Hawaii. Growing up I was spoiled eating all my Ommah's good food. (Hawaii also has a lot of wonderful Korean places to eat so I never had any incentive to learn how to cook my favorite dishes myself!)

Now that I have moved clear across the country where the Korean supermarkets are very tiny, Korean restaurants are few and far between, I am finally learning how to cook Korean food with your help Maanchi. (I am also 5 months pregnant so I have have lots of Korean food cravings).

My Ommah does not use any measurements in her cooking. I am so happy that I have found authentic Korean recipes. Even though I am only introducing myself now I have already tried many of your recipes.

Some of my favorite Korean foods are:
- Bibimbap (mixed rice with veggies)
- Soondubu jjigae (spicy tofu soup)
- Naengmyeon (cold noodle soup)
- Miyuk guk (seaweed soup)
- Samgyeopsal gui (grilled pork belly)

For me its no so much the cost but at home you know what is in the food and you can change the taste how you like it. You want it more or less spicy no problem.

That said me and my wife still love to eat at Korean Restaurants. A good BBQ house will have better cuts of meat than what I can normally buy. Yes I can mail order great beef but then it is cheaper to eat out.

Hi! My name is Lynn. I have been watching Maangchi's YouTube channel for a while now.

I watch her making Korean food more than I make it myself. The reason for that is because I couldn't find the grocery items I needed.

However, I am happy to say I found a Korean grocer locally. Items are a little pricey, but I can make stuff from time to time. :)

I found Mung Bean Starch so I am going to make myself some Mung Bean Jelly.

The only dish I have made so far (and is a favorite) is Bulgogi. :)
