Hello everyone! Wow this is a great community!
We are a couple living in Daejeon, South Korea as English teachers within the public school program.
We LOVE food, and really enjoy trying and learning about all different kinds of Korean food.
The food here is awesome, by the way! ;)
We are vloggers as well, so far our videos has focused on different restaurants in the Daejeon area, but (with knowledge from Maangchi's videos and some more research) we hope to start producing videos of Korean food that is available here in the coming weeks.
If anyone is interested, we have some sites of our own:

YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/user/gumbalayablog
Daily photo blog (mostly food): http://gumbalaya.tumblr.com

Thanks for reading! Looking forward to learning more about Korean food and culture!

Hello!
Have you tried the Goguma (Korean Sweet Potato) Cake?
There is a Korean bakery called "Shilla Bakery" here in the Washington DC region, and they sell Goguma cake and it is really scrumptious. I'm not sure how common Goguma Cake is in Korea, but if you can, I would greatly appreciate it if you can show us how to make this delicious cake!!!
Thank you in advance.

HI all,
this discussion is very interesting!
Is there anything that a pregnant woman would not eat or eat more of in korea?
What kind of snacks would a female eat during the day between meals if she is working?

I don't know if we're typical, but I can tell you my mother (full Korean) and my (half Korean but one that eats mostly Korean foods) eating habits are.

Breakfast
Mom and I basically eat the same things in the morning: rice with hot or cold corn tea, some banchan (typically not the spicy type) or just throw in some small anchovies. Some days she eats hot rice with a raw egg thrown in...a personal "ick" for me though. We both snack on a piece of fruit between breakfast and lunch. She snacks more than I do, but I eat larger servings at each meal than she does.

Lunch
I'm at work so I take things that are lunchbox friendly and not overly strong smelling as my co-workers aren't as open minded as I'd like: rice, Korean egg omelette, soy simmered egg or beef, seasoned spinach, simmered zucchini, sweet stewed potato, and seasoned dried squid are some of my faves. For dessert: fruit. Mom prefers something more hearty like rice, a spicy soup, and spicy kimchi.

Dinner
My mother is a die-hard carnivore. Has to have meat at every dinner. Usually beef or pork. I'm more of a soup and stew gal. A spicy mackerel stew or spicy beansprout soup makes my day. And I prefer fish (broiled mackerel, fried salted yellow croaker, or steamed whole tilapia...we both have a thing for the eyeballs) and chicken (spicy stewed with potatoes and carrots or simmered soup-like with tons of garlic).

One thing though. We never have as many side dishes as when we eat out at a Korean restaurant. Usually just one or two types of kimchi and maybe one non-kimchi side dish along with any soup or meat we're having.

I come from a military family and I have a lot of Asian friends who's ethnicity is Korean. I majored in Linguistics to work for the embassy as a translator and wanted to master the Asian language from Chinese to Korean. I eventually dropped out of Mandarin and Cantonese due to I was blending the dialects when speaking. Lol... I stayed in Korean and was fluent in the language for 3 yrs until I moved away and really didn't speak it for a long time. Sad I know... But I do comprehend it some. I learned a lot while in college and thinking of going to take some courses to get back in the hang of the language.

I have always loved different foods of all sorts and the unusual and extreme. I find it exciting and I enjoy the symbolism of the foods and the culture from which they derived from. My mom took me to my first Korean Buffet in our home town of Sierra Vista, AZ named Koreanna for my 10th birthday and it was just the 2 of us. It was nice and enjoyable and since then I was hooked. I cook Asian food all the time for myself and my family and friends. I am always making kimchi cause I can't live without it. I eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I can't keep it in my house long enough due to friends and family want to take it home.... lol.... So I am making very large quantities and I should be selling it.
I learn a lot by watching and improvising with what I have on hand if I don't have a certain ingredient. I have also found that the food that was made when they had no food or a large family to feed and were limited on what they had to feed the family are the best and the most enjoyed that friends and family of mine want me to make the most of the time.... I enjoy that cause it is easy and cheap on me and my wallet and I can feed an army and sometimes do by throwing a dinner party once in a while. Yeah!!!

Korean cold street food soup. I don't think there is any....

Soup, there are plenty

Streetfood Soup, Odeng Tang (Fishcake soup) might be the only one.
You can count Gukbab(Rice already in soup) kind of things in , cause they were traditionally and originally "Streetfood" (not that you stand up and eat but rather kind of in a fast food way.)

Cold soup, there are plenty, from cucumbers, egg plant to cold chicken soup(kind of a speciality).

Does anyone have a breakdown of what a Korean woman eats in a typical day? I want to construct a healthy way of eating for myself, and this kind of information is suprisingly difficult to find...

My friend & I originally made this fusion recipe for an online (Korean) cooking video contest. I was really surprised by how the prominent ingredients of the two cuisines blended well together. Hope you can try out these recipes as well. They're so easy to prepare! :)

FIL-HAN ADOBO - 필한 아도보 (Info about Adobo: http://foodreference.about.com/od/traditional_foods/a/Filipino-Adobo.htm)

Servings: 2-3
Preparation & Cooking Time: 30 - 35 minutes

Ingredients:
250 g Pork belly
150 g Tofu, cubed
1 Tbsp Gochujang 고추장
1 Tbsp Kimchi juice
2 tsp Sesame oil
1 tsp Korean Red Chili Powder - Gochugaru 고추가루 For garnishing:
Sprinkle Korean red chili powder on both sides of the pork.
In a medium sized saucepot/saucepan, put in the pork and pour in the soy sauce, water, vinegar, gochujang, kimchi juice & garlic. Cover. Do NOT mix.
Cook over medium fire for about 25 to 30 minutes until the pork is cooked and the sauce is thickened. It should be simmering, NOT boiling.
Uncover and put in the kimchi, sesame oil and tofu.
Cover and cook for 5 more minutes.
Serve with steamed white rice and/or with ssam fixings (lettuce, garlic, etc.)

The kimchi here is the best kimchi in town. Bar none, the best of any place that I have been to in Houston. I am not the only one who has said it about their kimchi. It's the best. Aside from the best kimchi, BEST KIMCHI, in town they have a great selection of Korean noodles, hence the name of the place, and it literally is a house, no joke. It's like your eating in some Korean grandmother's house. There are a few rice dishes and soups. The usual fare at a Korean restaurant. But not much of any banchan. You get a small ceramic pot of kimchi and that is it, with that being said, there is great food to be had here.

I always go for the bulgogi dolsot bibimbap (불고기돌솥 비빔밥). They did use to have the regular bibimbap with vegetables on top of the rice but they took it off the menu. The yukgaejang 육개장 is awesome as well. It is fiery red and super spicy, I love the broth, it is very savory and delicious and there are tons of vegetables and tender beef strips.

The noodles here are the knife cut noodles, kalguksu (칼국수) , I think is how you spell it and it's very delicious. Tender but chewy, toothsome noodles in various soups. I had the jjamppong (짬뽕). There is kimchi kalguksu. Mandu Kalguksu. And there are cold noodles too like bibimguksu (비빔국수) and mulnaengmyeon (물냉면) . There is also japchae (잡채).

Great food all around. I haven't had a bad dish here yet. So if you happen to be in the Spring Branch area in Houston definitely stop by Korean Noodle House, you won't be disappointed.

Happy early birthday! I really like to make Japchae for large parties because I can make a lot at once, its relatively cheap to make, and it can feed a number of people. Also, I am functioning on a college budge,t and this dish is good for that because you don't need a whole lot of meat for it. If you have lots of flavorful veggies added, you won't even miss it if you put less meat in to save money. A big platter of Kimbap is always a hit at parties too! I hope this helps, and good luck with your party :).

Hey everyone!

I'm new on maangchi.com, and am quickly becoming convinced that this is going to be a life savor!
In July, I'll be turning 18, and want to have a Korean themed birthday party; my mom and I are planning on cooking most of the food, and I'm actually getting ready to get up here in a minute to test the ddukbokkie recipe and see if I'll actually like it. ^_^ If anyone has any suggestions on what they think I should cook, I'd love to hear them!

Thanks, maangchi.com!!!

My first post in this Maangchi so please be patient. I suppose I should start with a quick intro and some general background information about me.

I've always been into Korean culture and music since I was a early adult. AS I got more into Korean stuff eventually I really got into the food and omg just as awesome Korean media is so is the food just as much!!

Returning from my first trip to korea this past summer I came back tasting so many different kinds of foods. My tongue was spoiled because I tasted only the best Korean food that exists, in the home country!! However returning to the States I wanted to continue eating the same Korean food I ate in Korea but Korean food here is so expensive. I can't speak for all places in the U.S. but at least here in the Bay Area its definitely on the pricey side.

So then I started my quest to learn how I can make similar dishes to some basic Korean dishes I love to eat so I could spoil my tongue even more and eat it more often, while saving money! ^^ So far I only cooked Soon Du Bu JJigae and Japchae and following this website I was quite successful. Actually normally I don't cook much but with a burning passion to eat more Korean food I learned how to make my first two dishes! And I'm nowhere near the end of my journey. ;D

Too excited and can't wait so I'll start...

My very first Korean recipe made in the New year 2012 is 김치 (Kimchi). Just made this little dish tonight. Yes, Safeway was out of produce because their delivery truck didn't make it due to inclement weather, so I took the last cabbage they had yesterday! Hehehe. :P

Hi oksipak! I was just thinking of you because I watched the mandu video. I'm going to either make mandu or jjimbbang mandu during my vacation from work. I'm also reminded by your post that I've been wanting to make bulgogi stew. I've been watching the Kimchi Chronicles (got the DVD for Christmas) and it was featured on there. And I think on Jamie Frater's food fan page he said it was one of his best dishes, so I've been wanting to try it since then.

All of your food looks fantastic. I just ate a big dinner, but it still is making my mouth water. I love chocolate cake like the one you made. I don't think I've actually ever made a cake like that. I should put that on my list too. The mac and cheese with chili sounds awesome and I'm not usually that into mac and cheese.

I definitely have gained a lot of confidence in my cooking skills over the past year. I know what you mean about "making Korean food without hesitation" I didn't make Korean food for a long time after my husband thought I couldn't even make ramen noodles well after an unfortunate overcooked ramen noodle incident, but I'm so glad that I finally gave it a real go. I still need to use a recipe for most of what I make, but I've even gotten to a point where I can make many simple panchan/ side dish recipes from memory.

We've also been enjoying some delicious Korean food lately. We had braised chicken with vegetables last week and tonight we had kongnamulbap (soybean sprouts bibimbap). My hubby has taken over with the kimchi making for the most part, which has been nice. I have been making yogurt, homemade bread, and soymilk so we won't have to buy any of those anymore and so we can eat less processed stuff. I also make tofu quite a bit.

I've lost 25 pounds now, but I am stuck. One of my New Year's Resolutions is to keep the house stocked with side dishes so I can eat Korean food more often. I've been eating so much salad lately and I'm tired of it. It was o.k. for a while, but especially as the weather has gotten cold, I need something heartier and warmer and Korean food is it for me. Satisfying and healthy.

Happy New Year! Hope that you and your family will have good health and find happiness in all your endeavors this year. And I hope to keep up our online friendship. It's been great reading your inspirational posts. I'll try to post more pictures of my food in 2012. How's that for a resolution? :)

It's Thursday, December 29, 2011, and only a few days before the new year! So what do I do? I tried making dakbokkeumtang (http://www.maangchi.com/recipe/dakbokkeumtang) and boy was it delicious. It's been raining cats-and-dogs here and comfort food like this recipe was much needed. I refrained from making a pig of myself by eating the entire pot in one sitting! By the way, I only made 1/2 the batch, for 2 servings, so if I ate that it wouldn't have been that bad. Right?

This will most likely be my last Korean recipe I try before the New Year 2012 arrives and what a way to end 2011. See you all in the new year to try some more new recipes from Maangchi. :D
