Oh man I want to get up to Palisades Park NJ. I live in West Chester, PA so I guess it wouldn't take too long to get there but is it really worth the drive? I currently only go to Upper Darby, PA which is about an hour away. I wonder why a good Korean restauranteur, wouldn't build one in a younger urban area?
I really think it'd be like Field of Dreams, Build it and they will come. Oh well, one of these days I'll get up to NJ to visit for some Good Korean BBQ.

I am so lucky to live not far away from the only Korean restaurant in my region (look for Naru in the restaurant section of the forum) that I cannot resist to treat myself to a dinner from time to time. A couple of days ago I stayed so long at work that I decided I needed a reward! I phoned the friendly owner of the restaurant and I ordered yangnyeom tongdak with a portion of kimchi and steamed rice. I couldn't wait to take it home...
Spicy fried chicken is simply irresistible, I have tried to make it a couple of times but the result is still very far from what the restaurant (or Maangchi) does.
To give you an idea of my delicious dinner I took some photos. Enjoy!

I love "Paris Baguette"!! When my elder sister and me were in Seoul, we have visited this shop many times. We have tried different flavours and I like Green Tea Latte the most. There's one branch in the Incheon Airport. I have ordered one Green Tea Latte again before I left Seoul. I look forward to have another cup of Green Tea Latte!! Really taste super and smooth!! :-)

Day 2 started with breakfast in the hotel which was the usual fare in Korean hotels as far as I am aware (from this and my previous stay): a buffet of European and Asian foods. I had scrambled eggs, french toast, bacon and kimchi (I had to have at least one Korean food for breakfast!)

After that we walked to Nangdaemun market which was absolutely amazing. It was street after street (and alley after alley) of clothes, fabrics, foods, kitchenware, and virtually anything you could want or need. I bought eight stainless steel nangmyeon bowls and eight rice and soup bowls. Needless to say I will definitely need to send a crate back to NZ with my shopping!

After the market we had a snack at a French coffee shop chain called Paris Baguette. I ordered a latte which was as good as at home and a red bean paste bun which was incredibly soft and delicious.

Today was also the first day of the government sponsored food tour: lunch at Hanmiri - an upmarket restaurant based on traditional Korean food. For the meagre price of $49 US per person we ate non-stop for 2 hours. The first wave of food was a series of salads which were mungbean jelly side dish (cheongpomuk muchim), japchae, lettuce salad, radish beef and cucumber salad and a huge bowl of mul kimchi which was amazing! It was incredibly refreshing and savory.

Next we got gujeolpan which was beautifully presented in a special gujeolpan dish made of Korean brassware especially for the restaurant. The pancakes were slightly green - colored with spinach juice I suspect. I was later told by a food expert that gujeolpan is more important for its colors (harmonious) than its taste which is considered to be bland.

Next we had wild sesame soup which was a light tan color and had a very subtle flavor. That was accompanied by galbi jim, a slightly seasoned dish of thinly sliced pork, and a plate of something that was very much like kimchi but wasn't made with cabbage - it was a very crunchy vegetable - maybe Maangchi can enlighten us on that one. One piece each with two huge mushrooms.

Continued in part 2...

Yeah, I heard about the Korean food truck on national news awhile back. That was cool news. I love Kimchi! But Kimchi Taco? Well, when I'm in NY...

Last Saturday I tried my very first Kimchi Pancakes via Maangchi's easy-to-follow video. Well, I didn't have home-made Kimchi so I cheated and used the leftover store bought kimchi, and boy it was still delicious! I ate that whole plate in one sitting! See photo...

Wow, looks great! Nice plate too! I have to admit, I usually end up eating the kimchi before it ages for very long. I should let it go for longer. Do you have a separate kimchi refrigerator? I just got my brother a crock pot for Christmas, I should have him make this! Btw, I just ate at Del Posto last night. It was amazing! If you are ever in the city, you should check it out.

Kimchi that has been stored for a long time at cold temps and really cold temps can be really good. When we have kimchi that is over one year old I like to make Kimchi Jjim 김치찜. I do it in the crock pot using kimchi, country style ribs and potatoes. Let it cook on low for about 8 hours...

Hehe... I bet we could find the 'kimchee facility' if we just followed our noses... Hope the neighbors like kimchee! I did hear about the kimchi shortage in Korea... I also heard about contaminated kimchi coming from China (surprise, surprise). You are right, we probably could make a couple of Won, hehe... Although, I don't know what that would be in dollars...

Just the latest in the the 'food truck craze'... Sounds interesting though! I'll have to check it out. Let me know if anyone has a sighting of this truck!

It will be serving kimcheesteaks, as well as kimchee rice balls, kimchee ramen and kimchee fried rice. The kimchee is going to be 'extra aged' for eight months in a special climate-controlled 'kimchee facility' in Brooklyn.

You can follow on Twitter if you want more info.

Thank you all for the suggestions.

I'm just back from the restaurant. I've had bulgogi with kimchi as side dish.

IT WAS FANTASTIC. I LOVE Bulgogi, kimchi is a bit too hot/spicy for me.

Anyway even my mother liked bulgogi and she isn't someone who quickly likes something new. So this dinner was a success.

South Korea watch out, here I come. ;-)

I am interested in finding a korean cooking class in NY that is held regularly. I checked ICE and they didn't have anything for 2010-11. Also, I am looking to learn how to make homemade doenjang.. I know it takes a long time to ferment and is not for those with sensitive olfactories, but I love love it and want to learn. I would also be into learning how to make korean food from a chef in a restaurant, but find it difficult to even figure out how to do so. My korean in not that good..

I agree with unchienne. You can't go wrong with bulgogi or bibimbap. Try kimbap also.

Based on what my non-Korean friends enjoyed whenever I took them to Korean restaurants, I'd say get some mandu or seafood pancake as an appetizer and try the bulgogi or bibimbap if you're not wanting to be too adventurous. My friends found most of the stuff to be too spicy, but really enjoyed the meats and the various banchan.
