Today I’m opening a new section on my website offering Korean cooking classes in New York.

I’d like to thank all of you for offering suggestions and support on my blog, by email, and even twitter. Wow, so many people spent some time giving me good advice! I’m very thrilled! I really think posting my favorite recipes on YouTube was one of the best decisions I ever made! I used to spend all my extra energy on my favorite online game, City of Heroes, for 2.5 years before I started this YouTube stuff.

I don’t mean playing the game was useless. It was very fun! I met a few good friends through the game.

I also realize that posting these recipes one by one on my website and YouTube might have confused some people who’ve never had a real Korean meal. I sometimes post a salty side dish, by itself. I sometimes post a dish that could be enough for 1 meal without any side dish at all (such as jjampong noodle soup).

So if you never met any Koreans you might be curious about what Koreans eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

For example, you may ask a question like this: “Maangchi posted a recipe for a dried anchovy side dish, and she says in the video it will be eaten with some steamed rice. So Koreans consider just a bowl of rice and some dried anchovies a meal?”

: ) yes, it could be a meal if you want! However, most Koreans plan their everyday meals based on more balanced diet.

So when I was planning the syllabus for my cooking classes, one thing I wanted to do was bring all these things together and show people how to make one big meal. This is going to take hours! Not minutes, like on YouTube. But the good thing is you could make some of these things separately. Making them together means a big celebration.

If this works well, I’m planning a series of 7 or 8 different Korean menus. Maybe even a Maangchi Certificate Program if you take all the courses and pass all the tests! Lol!

My goal is to make my students proud of their cooking skills and have confidence in their Korean cooking.

My first classes will be held on Saturdays so that people living far from Manhattan can join if they want to. You have to commit one precious Saturday weekend day, and so do I.

Class will start at 9:00 am and done at about 1:00 pm. From 1:00 pm to 1:30 pm, we’re going to have lunch together with the food we make.

My second class will start at 2:00 pm and finish at 4:30 pm. This one will be a bit different. We’re going to make something together but you’ll bring it home to eat with your family or friends. The class in May will make bulgogi. You will learn what kind of beef to choose, how to make marinade, and what side dishes are needed to enjoy bulgogi.

You can take one or the other, or both. And if you can’t make it, you can always watch me on YouTube!

Thanks for all your suggestions and support.

Maangchi: I was just reading your old blog posts when I found this. Do you think it might be possible that one day you make a little PDF or video that explains all about the composition of each meal in a Korean home (breakfast, lunch, dinner) and maybe a little explanation on how to plan the food for one whole week? Unless I am visiting friends I am only eating Korean for dinner now so it would be helpful for me to learn how to do a balanced week of dishes. Thanks :)

  2. i wish you were teaching cooking classes near me! OOOOORRRRRR maybe i could expense a trip to NYC for education purposes….hmmmm. i’ll have to work on that.

i agree with suz that your website makes it look very easy. i’m always asking my mom how to make something and its always a little of this, some of that, etc. she is always willing to help but sometimes its hard to get a straight answer. each batch of kimchee is different!!

thank you maangchi…for your time, your enthusiasm, and most of all for sharing all your knowledge.

    Maangchi,
I am so glad that you are going to be offering cooking classes. For a long time, my wife has asked me if I’d like cooking classes as a gift. I’ve looked into many, but nothing piqued my interest until I saw your website and Youtube videos.
I’ve only recently fallen in love with Korean food, though I’ve found myself eating it every week lately. I have kimchee with gim and rice for lunch often (away from everyone else, of course, lol).
It’s to the point that a Seoul born Korean-American coworker and good friend laughs that I eat more Korean food than his own sons.
Anyway, I’m looking forward to making one of your classes, possibly next Saturday. If not, then a future one.
    Hope to see you soon!!

Thank you for your interest in my class and hopefully you can make it!

  4. I just found your podcasts yesterday. I will be in NYC the weekend of the 16 – 19… too bad it doesn’t overlap with your cooking class. I need to learn how to cook!

Thank you for the videos. I always ask my mom how to make things but Koreans don’t ever have recipes… just “this much” or “just taste it” so I never knew how to cook anything. You make everything so easy– I’m sure I can cook anything!

It’s a shame I can’t enroll in your class too! It sounds so perfect! I’d love a MC (Maangchi Certificate)!
I wish you the best of luck. I’m sure your class is going to be a hit and soon you’ll have your own Food Network show!
    Have fun!

  8. I’m going to be in New York this weekend–any chance you might decide to offer a class then?

I want to go to the class but wouldn’t be able to make it on May 23rd. Maybe next time? I’d like to earn a Maangchi Certificate! Maybe if I enroll in culinary school in NY? I haven’t decided on that yet either!
