Hi everyone – I saw Maangchi’s wonderful video about steamed pears. Since pears are my favorite fruit, I want to make them. I bought two bags of dried jujubes in Chinatown today.
On the bag it says in English (quoting):
1. Raw foods – please cook before serving.
2. Do not eat as a snack! Proper handling instructionts. (sic)
3. Wash dates with tap water for at least five minutes.
4. Place clean dates in a pot of boiling water and cook for 15 minutes until soft.
5.. After dates are cooked, put in your favorite meats and/or vegetables and let simmer for 35-40 minutes.
Does anyone here have experience in cooking with dried jujubes? I thought they were just dried fruits! Do you really have to wash them for 5 minutes? Isn’t this a waste of water? Why is it not a snack food – they are just dried dates. These warnings have me scared.
Am I going to poison myself if I just eat one, unwashed and unboiled?

haha, that’s very strange instructions! It sounds like the fruits are seriously contaminated. If they are the same kind of jujubes that I use, don’t worry. They are just dried fruit as you said. I would wash 10 seconds and dry them before eating or cooking . : ) https://www.maangchi.com/ingredients/jujubes
