I’m relatively new to Korean food, and recently I bought a container of Seasoned Perilla (similar to perilla kimchi but not spicy) from the Korean grocery store. At first, I was like “OMG I’m never gonna buy this again! What a weird taste!” It has a somewhat bitter/minty taste. I’m not one to waste food, so I continued to eat it periodically… Well, by the time I got to the end of the container I loved it. Now I’ve added it to my shopping list. My favorite way to eat it is in a wrap with some sticky rice or sushi rice and some ssamjang dipping sauce (see maangchi’s recipe). I’m even considering growing my own perilla… :) Funny how you can acquire a taste for things… if you’re open minded…

I grew Perilla last summer, and it was so easy — it grows like a weed! Very easy, and the seeds are easy to save for next year, though I’ve heard it also self-germinates. I actually don’t like the taste, but my Korean BF and his kids love it. They make a type of kimchi with the leaves that they all really loved. I’ve tried it several ways, and it’s too licorice-like for me, though!

Thanks dwayinMA! I read somewhere else also that it’s easy to grow. After reading your comment Ive decided to order some seeds and give it a try! They are so expensive at the korean grocery store I shop at. They dont sell them fresh. They sell them packed in oil and seasoned. $7 for small amount. Thank you!

They are very expensive at mine too. Roughly 8-10 leaves are around $2-$3. That crazy high when you consider how much they weigh and they grow as easy as a weed.
Im pretty sure Kitazawa sells the correct seeds.

Thanks Evil I’m gonna check out that link. Have you tried growing them?

My father grew some. Im not very found of the flavor but its not bad in some soups. I do like the seeds for powder though so i just buy the powder.
