Tokyo Mart

By Maangchi

I was so happy to find this store yesterday. It’s at 91 Mulberry St in Chinatown. The closest subway is Canal St.

I saw many Korean ingredients (hot pepper powder, paste, seaplant.. etc) sold at a cheap price. They even have the short grain rice that I eat! I bought some dried noodles and Chinese egg roll skins.

I love to hang around this area. When you get out of the store, the street vendors on the sidewalk are selling all kinds of fresh vegetables at a tremendously cheap price. I bought a bunch of Asian chives for $1!

    Anja (Richard),
Yes, I go there (Hanareum) , too, but it’s always too crowded. I haven’t been to the store on the 3rd ave and 11 street. I should check it someday,
    Thanks!

This is for Richard who lives in Brooklyn. Where do you live? Since many delis are owned by Koreans you can often find some Korean groceries in a deli. And you can always just ask them for whatever it is you need…But I buy my stuff at HanaRheum on 32nd and it lasts for a long time. There is also a Korean store in the village on 3rd Ave and 11th St.

    Jane,
I saw fresh ginseng sold at a Chinese grocery in China town. I think you should leave your question on the forum. I’m new to New York. : )

    Maangchi,

Thanks so much for putting up that video about how to make saamgyetaang last year. I live in New York City, and I was wondering if you would know of a store which sells fresh ginseng root. Normally, I see the dried variety in Chinatown. Do you know if the H mart in K-town would have it?

    Thanks for your help!

    Hello, Richard,
Would you leave your question on my Forum? I’m sure you will get answer from those who are living in Brooklyn area. I’m new here, so I don’t know much about it. I go to the han a reum store where Cathy recommend. Sometimes I go to Tokyo mart and china town.

Hi Maangchi. Do you think they sell enough ingredients to make some of the recipes you posted? There are some I really want to cook at home. I can’t find any Korean ingredients here in Brooklyn. It takes me like an hour to get to Manhattan.
