This week our Korean Food Fan is Larry Rueschhoff. There is no good Korean grocery stores where he lives, but he is so dedicated to cooking Korean food that he goes across the river to another state to buy his ingredients! He also won third place in a local kimchi contest! Let’s hear abou Larry.

What is your name and where do you live?
I live in New Albany, IN, which is not the best place for a Korean food addict to live.
Luckily, Louisville KY is just across the river and has some decent Korean grocery stores!

Tell me about the first time you ever tasted Korean food. Where were you, and what did you eat?
My first experience with Korean food was in Fayetteville NC at a little Korean restaurant, after a night of partying… this place stayed open until 3 am. We had bulgogi, which was great, but the banchans really fascinated me… so many flavors and textures! It was years before I actually started cooking Korean, though.

How often do you cook Korean food following my recipes?
At least 2 or 3 times a month.

What are your favorite Korean dishes? Choose 3, please!
Bulgogi, japchae and kimchi.

What’s your best Korean dish, the one that everybody compliments you on when you make it?
Kimchi. I actually won third place in a kimchi contest a couple of years ago. A local Korean grocery store sponsored a contest….. they were AMAZED when the third place winner turned out to be a 40something white guy! ;)

Bulgogi always good for soaking up a night’s partying!

Anything in particular you do that makes your kimchi so good?
