This ridged grill pan slopes downwards so the fat rendered from cooking meat can drain into a second pan that fits underneath and surrounds it.

The resulting meat cooked on it is moist and juicy but not too oily, which makes this pan perfect for cooking pork belly. You could also just use a skillet and drain the fat as you cook, but these pans are not expensive (under $25) and are convenient if you’re going to make Korean BBQ often.

I’ve had my pan for quite a while, and it’s shape is modeled after a traditional Korean rice pot lid.I can put bits of garlic in the “handle” in the middle and they will roast while I cook the meat. The resulting garlic gets put into the ssam wrap with the pork belly.

Other models have a hole in the middle and slope downward so the fat will roll off down into the hole.

Is it easy to clean off the charcoal being left on the plate after BBQ? Is the surface going to peel off if I rub off the charcoal? Is it safe to put it inside the dish washer? Thanks.

I know this one, from owning cast iron frying pans. The charcoal is easy to scrape off. The surface may flake off when you rub off the charcoal, a little, but this is not a problem. It’s just iron after all, and can be cared for in the same way as any cast iron pan, see google for some how-to guides on that. You should not put this in the dishwasher, because then git will get really rusty and need to be sanded + reseasoned.

    Hi Maangchi

Here in Seoul, there are so many different types of BBQ grillplates: light ones and heavy ones; some with small holes around the plate. If posible, I’d like something that doesn’t drip too much on the stove and easy to clean. Could you recommend one? Appreciate your help.
