I’ve ordered nuruk for making makgeolli from Amazon, but the supply is a bit pricey due to the fact that it comes all the way from South Korea. I was wondering if anyone has found a good online supply in the U.S. that is cheaper than the Amazon price. I’ve gone to online Korean stores from Google, but none seem to have nuruk.
Hi,
Any luck finding a better supplier? I want to try making it but haven’t found the time. Do you think it has to be nuruk from Korea or I can use regular yeast, since nuruk is yeast.
Thanks,
Yong
Nuruk is more than just yeast. It also contains enzymes that convert carbs to sugars the yeast can eat.
The closest substitution is Chinese yeast balls called Jiuqu or just Qu.
