In kimchi korean chili powder is used, Korean chilli powder is a little different from another chilli powders because it has a slight smoky flavour as compared to another chilli powders in addition to being slightly sweet and also quite hot. So purchase korean chili powder from your near by grocery stores. You can find various types of red chili powder at http://www.exportersindia.com/indian-suppliers/red-chili-powder.htm

Fine gochu powder is normally used for other things besides kimchi. Coarse flakes do work better and is often milder than the fine powder. I have used the fine powder for radish kimchi and it worked pretty good.
Just cut back on the amount and make a small batch first. You might like it.
