Hello Fellow U.S. Maangchi Followers,
I don’t know about many of you but I have been looking to acquire Onggi over the past month to try some of her more involved recipes; but living in the Midwest makes it hard to find ingredients, tools, and utensils. I’ve had to be creative in acquiring Nuruk, Korean wood charcoal, etc. Finding Onggi may have been the most difficult to achieve without making a trip to the East or West coast or a special trip to South Korea.
I’m excited to share with you that I found a potter in the US who has studied Onggi making in South Korea; He currently resides in Montana. When I viewed his site I did not see anything related to custom orders, but I emailed him anyway. When he responded back, he does in fact make Onggi and ship them. I managed to put an order in for a 1-Gal, 2-Gal, and 5-Gal Onggi. I’ll attach pictures when I get them! He does hand make them, so he quoted me at about 4-8 weeks.
Perhaps this can help you guys achieve getting Onggi of your own.

Hi, I live in Indonesia where it is impossible to get onggi or hangari. So I ordered mine from eBay. They shipped them directly from South Korea.
I got my shipment in 2 weeks time.
Hope that helps.

Hello. I am currently in possession of two Onggi, and am interested in selling them. They were given to me by my sister who brought them back from South Korea in 1997, after having lived there for 5 years. They are both stamped by the potter, and in very good condition. One is approximately 2 gallons, and the other is probably closer to 10 gallons. I’ve never measured them proper, but the larger of the two is about 16 inches at its widest, and stands 21 inches tall with the lid on. Reply with email and we can discuss details.

Where do you live? If you are in/near Chicago, Fort Riley KS,or Fort Campbell Kentucky, there are Korean Supermarkets that may have Onggi. I’m sorry I don’t know the names, you will just have to do a search of the supermarkets and then email them. The brown clay crocks that are used to make Saurkraut and pickles are made out of clay that is similar to Onggi, Amazon has several offers. The color comes from iron and potassium. If you live near an Amish or Mennonite community, they may be making/ selling them. When I lived in North Carolina, there were places around Cherokee, that were making all kinds of pots.
If it has to be Korean Onggi, gmarket has them for sale, shipping will cost an arm and a leg.
