안녕하세요! My name is Flory. We moved to Florida a year ago to take care of my 89 year old mom. Before we lived in Alaska for 16 years and WA state for 4.
I have been making vegan kimchi and all sorts of Korean pickles for years. Husband got tired of my food smelling up the fridge, now I have my own. Before moving, grew Perilla, Asian garlics & greens. Here the heat, crappy soil, relentless sun/heat, and lack of water killed our garden.
At present, I’m attempting doenjang. The blocks are hanging from the ceiling and if all goes well, planing on making gachujang next.

FYI: jujubes pickled in vodka keep in the fridge forever and chopped are a wonderful addition to baked goods.

      감사합니다!

Hi, I’m also from Florida! I’m not a gardening pro, but I can help a bit. I’ve found you definitely have to water plants in the morning and evening. All the plants I’ve planted have died in full sun, so I’ve taken to planting them in partial shade. It’s helped immensely. As for the crappy, I’m guessing sandy soil, you might have to use a raised garden or just add better soil to you own dirt. My yard is very sandy so I just use pots/planter boxes. The good thing about florida Sun/heat, is that you can pretty much grow almost anything year around. Good luck!

Am not the only kimchi eater, happiness!
We did raised beds with an irrigation system and the heat boiled the soil. Plants are stunted. My perilla and tomatillos were 4 feet tall in WA and the greenhouse in AK here they are barely two feet tall. In fall we are going into the soil with compost, we have a huge compost heap, and amended soil. We have always grown most of our veg so not having a garden is quite distressing.

Have you been to the Korean grocer in Orlando? Gainesville? Tampa? Orlando I think is best but not a weekly for me, a bit away.

I’m from Titusville. I LOVE the grocer in Orlando!

I’m a newbie at cooking Korean food, but hubby loves it so I’m going to try. My problem is how to cook for only two people?

Korean food keeps rather well in the fridge. You can make an assortment of banchan, mix and match for meals.

I’m from Key West! The best way to combat bad soil quality here is to create your own boxes and fill them with soil and containers for runoff! It’s a bit of a hassle but it eliminates any more pollution! I love making pickles and tea so I’m trying the ginger tea tonight to give as a gift to my grandmother~ Tampa has lots of amazing Korean grocery stores, I’m always so amazed when I go, including an asian supermarket (very large, kinda like a publix!).

Hello Floridians. Great to meet you all and share stories and recipes about Korean food. If you ever visit Fort Pierce, we have a 5 star Korean restaurant. That is where I became obsessed with Kimchi and plan to make my first batch this year. Thank you to Maangchi’s videos and recipes. They are such a delight to watch and learn from.
