Hello everyone! My name is Cooper and I’ve been fermenting kimchi for a over a year at home.
Overtime I have learned to appriciate the Onggi as a fermentation vessle that can benifit the fermentation process of all ferments with its breathable material.
After watching many videos,
online posts, and documentaries of the Onggi, bought one at my local H-Mart and want to keep it outside on my patio for sunlight and circulatiom but I’m scared that bugs will want to get inside. In a documentary I saw that those who had Onggis outside had straw around the rim which I believe it’s to prevent bugs from
going in.Can anyone more knowledgable help me know what that straw is called, how it is made and other additional tips to keeping Onggi safe outside? There is almost no information about this specific subject in english that I could find, only thing I found was amn illistration that I will upload.
Thank you so much for reading my post!

Hey! Sure thing! Those straws are usually referred to as ‘onggi lids.’ They are usually a combination of straw and clay. Other than a lid, using a tarp or plastic wrap is a great way to keep Onggis safe outside as well!
