I have always used coarse flakes for making tteokboki.
Today I was in the Korean market in Hong KOng and the shopkeeper insisted I should use powder for tteokboki and coarse flakes only foir making kimchi?
I gave in and bought the powder, have I been wasteful
Haha
You can use either hot pepper flakes or powder to make tteokbokki. For me, I use fine powder only when making hot pepper paste. For everything else I use flakes.
Good luck!
Hi Maangchi! I finally trying to make kimchi, but I don’t have gochugaru. Can I use a non-Korean hot pepper flakes? What’s the difference between gochugaru and other hot pepper flakes? In Hungary we have pretty good hot pepper flakes… I thought maybe I could use that…
Korean pepper flakes have the seeds removed and sun dried. They should have a nice deep red color. Heat level is pretty mild and almost sweet.
