Many of the stores near me carry Korean pepper flakes but they are grown in China. Many of them also contain salt. Finding Korean grown pepper flakes has been a challenge.
I found these and all they can tell me is they are from Korea and this one is HOT. Ingredients only list peppers but sodium is listed under nutrition. Rhee Bros and Korean Farm websites dont even show this one. These pepper flakes are very expensive compared to brands i usually get. Almost $18 for 1.1lbs.
Can anyone that can read Korean give me more details please.

Yes that is real red pepper powder, the sodium content is just what is in living organisisms, ( if you were dried out your descicated remains would be a bit more than 2% Na ;) Now for the price, $18 seems pretty expensive, I just bought that same package for about $12 in Sweden, and food is usually 30-40% higher in Sweden than in the US.

Many brands of pepper flakes have added salt. Assi brand for example has a lot of salt that is far more than naturally occurring.
This brand is made in China packaged in Korea but sodium is 0.

I’m in the US and I’m having a heck of a time finding red pepper flakes produced in Korea. Every package I look at shows “Product of China” – sorry, not a fan. Is it possible to get real Korean red pepper flakes in the US? If not, how about Canada? I’m heading there in December and will stock up if I can!! ;)

Yes you can find them but they are expensive. The last bag i got was around $18/1.1lb. Assi brand only cost around $8/2lbs
This one is from Korea but its hotter than most.

You could always grow your own like i did this year. Kitazawa seed company offers the seeds. It will take a bunch of plants to make a kilo of powder though and removing the seeds is very time consuming.

Wow, thanks for including an image of the packaging. I am going to check out some Korea markets while I’m in Vancouver to see what I can find.
Kudos on growing your own peppers! Wow!

The pic of the Korean flakes is the only brand i can find anywhere near me. Only 1 store had them and it was a Korean market. They are hotter than coarse Assi, Wang or JayOne brands.
There is a USA brand also but the peppers are now grown in Mexico.
MotherInLaws gochugaru but you probably wont see them in markets and the are expensive online.

I’m very glad for this thread, because the first bag I bought (almost finished with it) is not hot at all, which is very disappointing to me. I need the heat! I will look for Assi brand next time I’m at Joong Boo Market (I live in Chicago).

The Assi brand is not super hot. The other pic i posted are hot so if you like your kimchi really spicing use those.
Use these if you like really spicy kimchi. Flavor is great too.
Use these if you like a more common heat level.
