Anyone have any recommendations for soy sauce substitutes in Korean recipes? I have Maangchi’s cookbook and have been having a blast trying out the different recipes. I’d love to find a viable soy sauce substitute though… I have a person in my household with an allergy to it. I know it’s pretty integral to a lot of the recipes, and leaving it out can leave a big hole in the flavor of the dish. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Wheat or soy?
There are wheat-free soy-sauces available.
If soy is the reason, you may try fish-sauce (very salty!) instead.
Or glutamate. If the latter is the problem – well, just leave it and use a little more salt (preferably sea~) and/or some seaweed instead. With fresh ingredients, it will taste different, bust still delicious!- November 23, 2017 at 8:38 am #75781sunsoakedherbsParticipant
Unfortunately it’s a soy-based allergy. Going to try fish sauce tomorrow as a substitute in a soup, so we’ll see how it goes! Thanks for the suggestion!

Yes, is it a wheat or soy allergy because there are MANY wheat free soy sauce options.
Kikkoman gluten free (blue bottle) is very good and contains no wheat. Most good tamari has no wheat also.
If its a soy allergy then nothing tasted like soy sauce. Redboat40n fish sauce would be my best suggestion.
