Making bulgogi with The New York Times

By Maangchi

Hi everybody,
I’m so excited today because there’s an article in The New York Times about me, on the front page of the Food section! A couple weeks ago Julia Moskin from The New York Times came to my house to film a video where I show her how to cook bulgogi.

Of course I film in my apartment all the time, but she came with a big crew: 2 cameramen, a food stylist, a director, and a sound man, with a huge cart of equipment. There was so much stuff, I asked them if they were moving in! My apartment is pretty small, so they put all of it in my bedroom.

When I film my videos, I’m the director, but this time I had to listen to them and take direction. Sometimes I gave them my idea on what to film, and often they accepted. We worked together to make the best video we could.

Serious dudes filming food!

And of course we have to eat! After the video shoot, we all sat at the table and ate the food, plus more food that I made for them.

Then Morgan Ione Yeager came and took food photos for the article, and also my portrait.

It was a fun day, and the video and article turned out well. It was great to meet these talented people who are all passionate about sharing food, like me!

Maangchi, you look great in this clip! Your recipes mean the world to me. I’ve always been an awful cook, but since I’ve been using your recipes, I get tons of compliments! You are a genius, thanks so much for your brilliant teaching :)

Wow! Congrats on the feature and video! Chuka haeyo!

Oh my god, I can just see how overwhelming it must have been to greet everyone and see all of their equipment! Your bedroom must have looked like a Tetris game with all of their things inside.

Thank you again for your videos – I have your book and have carefully pasted the bookplate inside it. I read it through just like a normal book!
