Tonight I was invited by The Asian American Association of Time Inc. to see a preview screening of the movie “Today’s Special,” written by and starring Aasif Mandvi from The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Aasif plays Samir, who dreams of being a famous Manhattan chef but has to run his family’s Tandoori restaurant.

After the movie there was a Q&A with Aasif and he answered all questions very patiently. Then he took a photo with me.

Aasif Mandvi,
If you like Babette’s Feast, Tampopo, or Chocolat, you will love it. It’s a real movie for foodies, and you can also learn about Indian culture.

Naseeruddin Shah plays an old man in the movie who used to be a famous chef in India, before coming to America to be a taxi driver. In the movie, he says that you can cook without a recipe, as long as you cook from your heart and with your emotions. This reminded me of Korean housewives who have been cooking for a long time, who always cook perfectly without measurements. It’s because their food is coming from their heart!

There’s a little bit of everything in the movie: a little comedy, a little romance, and a little cultural conflict. The movie opens Nov 19 and I think I’ll go again after it opens and bring my friends, so they can have a good laugh.

Now I’m craving a good chana masala. Must learn how to make it, since there are no Indian restaurants around here (or any ethnic restaurants, for that matter).
