yay, it sounds very fun!
300 students will be impressed by your delicious Korean bulgogi meal. Make a lot of rice, bulgogi, and kimchi or kkakdugi as a side dish. yum! Slice the beef very thinly and add lots of sliced onions. Marinate it overnight so that the beef will be tender. Cook the marinated bulgogi in your large wok. Or you can pan-fry it. It doesn't have to be hot when you serve.

Good luck with the event and let me know how it goes. Don't forget to take some photos to share with me and my other readers please. I'd like to see some photos of your student's eating! : ) http://www.maangchi.com/photos

I am a teacher and we are having an International day at our middle school for our students with many different foods represented. I have a $250 budget and I was wanting to cook bulgogi on a bed of rice as small tasting samples for the students we have about 300 students that would be brave enough to try it. Of course I will also have kimchi for the brave little souls to try. =)

Are there any tips from how to keep it warm, how to cook a large amount of bulgogi? Is it best to broil in the oven to save time? I will have to do all of my cooking myself, I do have a very large wok too.

Any and all suggestions are welcome. Keep in mind these samples will be in small 4oz. cups maybe..

Hi Everyone!
I live in the Chicago area and love my Korean food. Unfortunately, we moved to the north burbs and the dining here is lacking, particularly in Korean food! I went to the Costco in Lincoln Park and found these new seasonings and bought them about 3 weeks ago and must share them with my fellow Korean food lovers! I've cooked with these seasonings and added them on food too (Bulgogi seasoning on veggie pizza and Kimchi seasoning on almost everything!) Seriously brings all the flavor without the trek to the Korean market miles away. The Stir Fry Seasoning is so good in soups and added to rice bowls.

Anyway, thought I'd share with everyone cause it's a great find!

(oh - the brand name is "Swagger")

Hello! I would like to share one of my favorite Korean dish, beef Bulgogi!

Ingredients (for 4 servings):

Beef Chuck Eye sliced - 400g
Dry wine - 4T
Korean/Japanese soy sauce - 4T
White sugar - 4t
Pint of pepper
Garlic minced - 1T
Sesame oil - 1T
Chopped green onion

Instructions:

1) Put the meat and wine into a same bowl and let it sit there for about 5 minutes.
2) Take out the meat from wine and marinate the meat with soy sauce, sugar, garlic, and sesame oil and mix them well.
3) Let the marinated meat sit for about 30 minutes.
4) Add meat and green onion into a pan and stir fry in high setting until the meat turns into brown color. Don't forget to season it with pepper!
5) Serve hot and enjoy!

Hi Maangchi and Maangchi community! I honestly can't say when I started lurking at Maangchi.com for recipes, tips and inspiration but one thing's for sure, it definitely has helped me through my Korean food cravings. I finally had a day off in the middle of the week, and decided i'm gonna make Korean food. I made bulgogi, kkaenipjangajji, sukjunamul, musaengchae and sigeumchi namul, all the recipes are from this site, and they were all equally delicious. I will try to figure out how to post a picture on here as well. I'm so full from all the food I made for my partner and myself, I think I'll go into food coma after hitting the post button. lol ^_^

Sometimes it can happen when you use too much of tenderizing agents(enzymes)

For example,

"Asian Pears" have enzymes that break down proteins,
making it the traditional meat tenderizer,

Pineapples, which are used commonly in Korea nowadays, too have similar enzymes, which are much stronger,

Kiwi (fruit)s have a ridiculously strong protein breaking enzyme
which will literally "melt" any meat into goo.
(So you should never use a lot of kiwis or kiwi juice when your making the marinade
or leave it for a long marinade. )

But, in your case, think the meat itself had some problems,
It might have been some thinly sliced & frozen bulgogi meat,
or the butcher gave you something wrong.

I hope you get a good batch next time.

What cut of meat did you use? And did you cut it, or did the butcher do it?

I recently made Jae Yuk Gui (pork bulkogi) using a pork tenderloin that I had in the freezer. I sliced the meat thin by hand. When I put the meat in the marinade I found it separating, and it was very difficult to lay out for cooking.
Since tenderloin has very little connective tissue, it would probably be better to slice it just a little thicker.

So, I would say the problem was probably your meat.

hi there, today we bbqed some bulgogi (and some hot dogs) and the bulgogi meat completely fell apart during cooking! this hasnt happened to me before.

can anyone guess what i might have done wrong?

my marinade does not use juice. these are the ingredients in the marinade:

soy sauce
sugar/honey
sake
sesame seed oil
green onions
grated ginger
minced garlic
sesame seeds and pepper

the texture of all our meat is now similar to ground beef!!

i mixed the marinade and the beef about an hour before cooking (like i usually do) and we grilled over charcoal briquettes.

did i get a freak batch of meat sliced the wrong way? (unlikely, but maybe?) or... or i dont know. its never happened.

thanks in advance for any and all help for avoiding this in the future.

Thank you very much for this website. I found it few weeks ago in August of 2009. I greatly enjoy the site.

I was born in Seoul, South Korea and have moved to the states shortly after I was born. I currently reside in central North Carolina and enjoy the area. Unfortunately, I haven't had the opportunity to go back and visit my home city of Seoul. I am pretty sure things have changed in the last 30 years of not being there. I do plan on going back one of these days. I loved it every time my mother (full blooded Korean)cooked for me when I was young, but ever since my mother passed away back in 1995 I was lost without the wonderful foods. I have searched the internet to find a decent website that would have a lot of her recipes that she made for me while I was a little boy. During that time, from then to now, I was unsuccessful of find a good site, until recently that is.

When I found this site and saw all the recipes that you had, my eyes lit up as bright as the sun and my heart filled with joy. I finally found a site that had all the foods my mother made (maybe a few missing, but that doesn't matter).

I've been with my wife for around four years now and when I met her, she didn't know what real Korean food was. I took her to a restaurant in Savannah, GA (my hometown), the only restaurant I knew of, and she fell in love with the food. . I have also found a few more restaurants else where around the city I live in and have had the opportunity to enjoy myself at each one. Then I found your site. I have since made your version of the Bulgogi and my wife and I loved it and it reminded me so much of my mothers cooking

I have modified the Bulgogi recipe just slightly, so that the meat was more of a cube shape instead of the slices, for a friends birthday party. I made the dish in a kabob style for easy finger style food. Everyone that attended the party never knew of Korean food and never tried it. When I came in to the kitchen to prepare the dish, everybody that was there was hovering over the dish smelling the wonderful smell of the marinade. They all stated that they could probably eat the dish right out of the bowl, raw and all. I obviously advised not to and to sit tight for the cooking of. When I was finished grilling the dish and placed them on the table for everyone, I had enough time to turn around and turn back and the plate was practically empty. Luckily enough, I was able to get one before they were completely gone. Just to say, that everyone loved the recipe and I told them about your site. I haven't had to many opportunities to make some of your dishes but I do plan on it and I will post them for everyone to see.

Thank you very much for this website. I don't know what I would've done if I haven't found it. I missed true Korean food so much that I was practically going crazy. Thanks again and I look forward to seeing what else you plan on putting on the site.

i would like to know the recipe of this....
i don't if i spell it right but my friend told me that it's
called Oojingo....
it's a side dish that use pre-cooked squid with the hot pepper paste....it's almost same like the anchovy side dish recipe....
i saw my friend make it and i tried it but it's kind like missing some thing inside....so i would like you to do this kind of recipe....coz i liked to try to do it....
(SORRY I GOT A BAD ENGLISH.....)

NB:
