I'm James, from West Virginia in USA.

I have a general love of food and cooking, with a particular interest in all things Asian, especially Korean type because it is incredibly spicy. I don't have access to much of the same ingredients Maangchi uses, the local Wal-Mart doesn't even stock half of the ingredients sometimes, however I find it easy to improvise with my knowledge of traditional American cooking of what can be substituted and what can't.

Kimchi is my absolute favorite dish. The hardest part about it, in my opinion, is waiting for it to ferment just right. I love it sour as much as I do spicy. I make mine using all the colors of bell pepper, lots of garlic, green cabbage (I can't find Chinese cabbage no matter where I look) onions and red pepper powder mixed with vinegar to make a very sour red pepper sauce (can't find flakes anywhere.) I also use anchovies as my source of fish sauce. Probably an odd recipe, I know, but again, there isn't much world culture where I live.

I am always experimenting in the kitchen. I've managed to cook some stuff that no one around here has ever even heard of before. In fact, my mom just tried Kimchi for the first time ever today.. She couldn't handle it.. I made it too spicy for her. (But I love it)

About me personally, I'm a computer geek by education but a security guard by profession. I'm the type of person who could go outside, tear down and rebuild a car, but come inside and do the same with a computer. I'm what is locally known as a high tech redneck.

I'll finish by giving a big thank you to Maangchi for sharing her amazing food and culture with the entire world. You've given me a lot of amazing information, and I'm always waiting for the next video or site update. :D

Hello Everyone!

Nice to see some Seattle People :D

I'm Vanessa, I was adopted from Korea when I was a baby - I've never really liked Korean food until now! I've been watching a lot of Kdrama, and the food looked so yummy. I've been a fan of Maangchi for a while now, and I've been making a lot of recipes lately for my husband and I to try. I currently live in the Woodinville area, and I love to shop at the Lynnwood H-Mart... so many good things there!

Hello, I'm from Seattle too! I love Koran food and am so, so happy I found Maangchi's videos, she makes it look so easy and they're all very clear.

Actually I live in Lynnwood, and I have some sad news for you. The Pal-Do World food store on Highway 99 has gone out of business! We went to H-Mart yesterday and I couldn't find rice cakes or red pepper confetti strips (can you believe that?) so we went to Pal-Do which I know carries them... and it was closed down and the whole inside was empty.

It will be opening again as a new place and will also be a Korean food mart, so we shall see how that works. The various other businesses inside Pal-Do are still active, such as the food court, etc.

Nice to meet you all!

Hi, I'm in Seattle too! Well, ok, Lake Forest Park, but it's still Seattle ;) We have a lot of good Korean restaurants up north. Where is everyone's favorite restaurant and/or store for Korean food?

Dominique,
You sound so interesting! I too want to follow more of a vegan raw foods diet and I have made alot of Korean salads and kim chi without the fish sauce, shrimp/anchovies. It tastes fresh and good! I love that about some many Asian cultures. They really use what grow on the earth to eat. Healhy and delicious!

Maangchi suggested I join the forum so here I am! I am a caucasian living on the east coast, currently NC, but am from MD. All my life I have been attracted to Asian culture, food and language, but I also took ancient Greek and Spanish in school. Last year I received my degree in Culinary Technology and I cook for a living. Currently I am writing a vegan cookbook as I follow a strict vegan diet. But one of the greatest things about Asian food is that it is so easy to adapt and not lose any flavor! It will be fun to "veganize" some of Maangchi's recipes so that I can try everything as Korean food is one that I am least familiar with. All the hard work that Maangchi has done is to be applauded - she is so warm and shares her knowledge with everyone as if they are family. She has inspired me to make my own blog and videos and to be brave and show myself on camera! I look forward to talking with many of you to share knowledge and experiences and please do not hesitate to introduce yourself!
