Hey there, I am a korean living in south africa, and despite the abundance of westernised food here, I still have a strong desire for traditional korean dishes. I am so glad to have come across this website and am impressed by the international appeal for korean cuisine! Your recipes do not seem overwhelming, especially 오징어젓! I have to try this recipe as I looove 오징어젓갈 and only eat it maybe once a year or so? ( When friends or family go to korea and bring it back!)

Thanks for having a strong passion for our korean heritage! Fighting :)

I stumbled across this interesting article from South Africa's Mail and Guardian:

http://www.mg.co.za/article/2010-04-06-wellbalanced-happy-food

This opener drew me in:

"My first encounter with Korean food was in Los Angeles at the renowned but strangely named Soot Bull Jeep."

Soot Bull Jeep! What a great name! Turns out this is a very popular restaurant:

http://www.yelp.com/biz/soot-bull-jeep-los-angeles

Anyway, the author of this article goes on to discuss why bulgogi is not so popular in South Africa:

Korean bulgogi hasn't taken off here. South Africans like things done for them -- as one Pieter-Dirk Uys character famously said when contemplating the revolution: "I'd rather die in my bed than have to make it myself." Cook their own food? Think of all the fondue places that have failed here.

This also made me laugh out loud, I'd never heard this expression before.

It's a very well-written article, and if you're curious about Korean food in Cape Town, I recommend you read the whole thing.

Hi all, I found Maangchi, because I am into fermentation and I saw her video on Kimchi. Well it was wonderful and by now my kitchen is full of things fermenting. I make Kombucha, Kefir, Beet Kvass, some of my own cheese and try and grow my own veg as far as possible.
I have adapted your Kaktugi recipe for my organic radishes out of the garden and it worked very well !Thank you so much for all your effort Maangchi ! I don't know where you get the time to be so personal on a site like this and on Youtube.
