Maangchi, at the local H Mart, there are pre-packaged stews - big Styrofoam trays with all the produce, meat and sometimes sauces all gathered together and then covered over with plastic wrap.

Is there a general rule on how to prepare them? Thanks!

There is a lot of history this dish spam and hot dogs were introduced to Korea during and after the Korean War. Korean cooks learned how to use the American ingredients in a Korean jjige. For a long time this was considered poor people food but is now becoming popular as just plain good food. Be sure to try it with a few friends and a bottle of soju.

Some names for this dish are:
Pudae-jjige
army base stew
Johnson tang
pudaejjige
Bu dae chigae
Korean
Budaechigae
부대찌게

I love the dish and it is flexible in that you add what you want. Some versions call for cheese but I have not tried that that.

Hi Maangchi,

My mom used to make this fish stew but it's not the one listed on your site. It's more of a marinated fish dish. It's heavy on the soy and red pepper flakes. It has a sweetness to it as well. She would use some sort of white fish. Do you know what dish I am trying to describe? Need help!

First, I just found this site and thank you. I have looked forever to find a recipe for Gamjatang. It is one of my favorite dishes. I have tried making it and it didn't turn out very good. I will now try your recipe and hope I have better luck. Also, many times when I have it, there is a sauce that is for dipping the meat in. Can you tell me what is in it?

Another favorite of mine is Military Stew (Budae Jigae). I hope someday you add that to your recipes.
