Anyone recently bought black bean paste in Singapore?
I've tried looking for it at the Korean supermarket in Marina Square and the Sol Korean mart at Westmall to no avail. They have stock for other kinds of bean paste but not black bean paste. They don't carry the jjajangmyun noodles too.

Please help! Thank you

It's called JJol myun, (쫄면). A wheat version of so called "pressed starch noodles; like naengmyun noodles". They say that a Naengmyun factory near Incheon, accidentally put wheat flour instead of starch in the machine and came out with this noodle. LOL

All you'll need is the noodles, cause they are the main ingredient of this dish, some vegetables chopped thinly, some gochujang, sugar and vinegar. That probably sums it up.

Comparing the sauce to Bibim naengmyun and Bibim gooksu, it is more similar to Bibim gookso, meaning it should be lighter and tangier,

The description for it that i found online was "Chewy, chewy noodles are mixed and mixed with a sweet, tangy, salty, and spicy sauce" The picture that accompanied the description there too. It was from a restaurant. It looked very appetizing.

The kimchi here is the best kimchi in town. Bar none, the best of any place that I have been to in Houston. I am not the only one who has said it about their kimchi. It's the best. Aside from the best kimchi, BEST KIMCHI, in town they have a great selection of Korean noodles, hence the name of the place, and it literally is a house, no joke. It's like your eating in some Korean grandmother's house. There are a few rice dishes and soups. The usual fare at a Korean restaurant. But not much of any banchan. You get a small ceramic pot of kimchi and that is it, with that being said, there is great food to be had here.

I always go for the bulgogi dolsot bibimbap (불고기돌솥 비빔밥). They did use to have the regular bibimbap with vegetables on top of the rice but they took it off the menu. The yukgaejang 육개장 is awesome as well. It is fiery red and super spicy, I love the broth, it is very savory and delicious and there are tons of vegetables and tender beef strips.

The noodles here are the knife cut noodles, kalguksu (칼국수) , I think is how you spell it and it's very delicious. Tender but chewy, toothsome noodles in various soups. I had the jjamppong (짬뽕). There is kimchi kalguksu. Mandu Kalguksu. And there are cold noodles too like bibimguksu (비빔국수) and mulnaengmyeon (물냉면) . There is also japchae (잡채).

Great food all around. I haven't had a bad dish here yet. So if you happen to be in the Spring Branch area in Houston definitely stop by Korean Noodle House, you won't be disappointed.

Hi Maangchi!^^

With the summer coming up, why don't you post a recipe of the yummy 메밀국수??^^ I'm in Korea nowadays and I've come to know through friends that MAKING 메밀국수 is a lot cheaper than BUYING it in a restaurant. Of course I can search for recipes on other websites, but until now my Korean cooking has always turned out best using YOUR recipes, so I would appreciate it a lot if you would upload a video of how to make yummy 메밀국수 before summer ;)

Thank you for reading and thank you for this awesome website!!^^

I absolutely looovveee 칼국수 (Korean noodles). When I go to restaurants, I usually only see it made with seafood which is unfortunate because I can get a bit picky when it comes to seafood. Luckily, my mom would make it with chicken at home. But now that I'm in college, I really crave 닭칼국수.

Try this spelling: guksu jangguk. From your step-by-step description, it sounds like you are 99% on your way to buying the ingredients and making your own soup. If I were doing this, I'd cheat a little and use canned beef broth because there is enough flavor in the beef, mushrooms, garlic, onions and peppers to drown out the ho-hum flavor of the broth you use. Soups are so forgiving that if you don't make them right, they taste great anyway.

For years and years, my family and I used to go to Korean restaurants and order our absolute favourite thing on the menu: Gooksoo Jungo (I think that's the name?). It's a hot pot item you can order and then an attendant comes over and cooks it in front of you either on a little heating element or right on the table.

They first bring over a copper pot full of beef broth (always a mystery to me what it is exactly) and then they will cook sliced shabu shabu beef, mushrooms, leeks, green onions, shingiku, spinach and other vegetables in the beef broth. At the very end they will add this delicious hand-pulled flour noodle and then season with lots of crushed garlic and black pepper. Hot pepper flakes are served on the side.

Does anyone have a recipe for this to re-create at home? Or even, something similar to it so I can finally taste it again after craving it all these years! (I moved away to a city where no Korean restaurant has it)

I was at the store a few days ago and came across "seaweed jelly" in the refrigerated section by the seaweed stems and the brown stuff you put in "yook-gae-jang", and I realized that this was the food I ate in a restaurant a long time ago and had a very crunchy, and light texture. I asked about this dish a while ago, and I'm very excited to have found what it was made out of!

I wasn't THAT excited to buy it, since I have no idea if I can eat it raw, or if I need to put some soy sauce/sesame oil in it. I also had some doubts as to the texture of the seaweed jelly (it might not be the crunchy, light noodle that I am thinking of).

Has anyone tried this seaweed jelly before? Does anyone know whether or not the seaweed jelly is crunchy at all?

Dearest Maangchi, if you know how to make this dish, please consider sharing this recipe with us! It's very good (if I remember correctly) and seems very simple. Thanks <3
